Tanoa Aspen: Revamped rooms maximise yield for Queenstown property

The Tanoa Aspen hotel in Queenstown's has recently completed the refurbishment of 21 rooms,

which was the last stage of a major renovation project at the property, says manager Fiona Williams.

Situated at the top of Fernhill, with spectacular views across Queenstown, the 88-room hotel caters for a wide cross-section of the tourist, family and corporate market, and the refurbishment was undertaken in order to maintain the hotel's competitiveness in the popular tourist hot-spot, Ms Williams says.

"The two-month refurbishment project was finished at the end of June in time for our ski season. We had the rooms stripped, with new furniture installed – headboard, desk and desk chair, occasional chair, wardrobe and tea and coffee unit, as well as having new paintwork and new sheer and blockout curtains installed.

"The rooms previously had one queen and one single bed, and these have been replaced with split king beds and new bed linen."

The fresh, modern décor is highlighted with eye-catching red bed runners and cushions, reflecting one of the theme colours of the Tanoa group, Ms Williams says. The refurbished rooms also feature new LCD TVs, new lighting, Wi-Fi internet (surcharge applies) and iPod docking stations. Twelve of these rooms have their own balcony.

Completing the room refurbishment, the bathrooms have been redesigned, with the baths being taken out and replaced with up-to-date shower units, creating a more spacious, modern bathroom for guests. New toilets have also been installed.

"The refurbishment has meant we can generate more revenue on the current room rates. This allows us to maximise the yield, and it also provides us with opportunities to up-sell from our Standard Courtyard rooms to the Superior rooms and then on to our new Deluxe Lake View rooms," Ms Williams says.

Situated in the inner section of the hotel near the reception and Panorama restaurant and bar area, the refurbished Lake View rooms offer stunning views of Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables, enhancing the guest experience that only Queenstown can offer. These rooms are complemented by the hotel's 40 spacious Courtyard rooms, which are sited in a u-shaped block facing on to the courtyard.

"Our superior rooms, which are also very spacious, have views on to the courtyard and towards the Ben Lomand mountain range. We have 16 of these that have new furniture and new LCD TV screens and they are very popular with our corporate market," Ms Williams says.

"Rooms on the upper level of the two-storey hotel each feature their own balcony where guests can relax and enjoy the fresh air over a morning coffee or evening tipple whilst watching the amazing natural light show at sunset on The Remarkables mountain range."

For family groups, the Tanoa Aspen also offers several spacious one and two-bedroom apartments, fully equipped with kitchen, dishwasher and washing/drying machines, and with large balconies where guests can spread out and relax after enjoying the many recreational activities and sight-seeing opportunities in Queenstown.

"Our Panorama restaurant and bar provides our many in-house guests and locals with somewhere comfortable to dine or to enjoy a beverage. Our menu caters to even the most distinguished diner with well-priced food and beverage options as well as weekend specials.

"Our bar has Sky channels, which allows us to show all major sporting fixtures on the large 46-inch LCD screen or on our five-square-metre pull-down screen for the really important games!"

The hotel's conference room is available for business groups to hold conferences and meetings on site. Guest facilities include two spas, a ski-drying room, secure mountain bike storage, internet computers, guest laundry and 24-hour reception. Below the hotel's accommodation complex is a grassed area with a volley ball net and plenty of room to kick a ball around.

Ms Willams notes that, although the Christchurch earthquakes have resulted in some reduction in bookings, the hotel is enjoying the spin-off from the Rugby World Cup, with visitors stopping off in Queenstown on their way to and from the matches being played in other centres around the South Island.
