Hurley’s of Queenstown

Started in October 2010, the project has seen all 22 self-catering accommodation facilities, which comprise luxury studios, executive suites and two-bedroom apartments, fully refurbished, with a new colour scheme, new beds, bed-heads, carpets and light fittings.

"The complex was built in '95-'96," says Ann Cowan, who operates the business with her husband Allister, "and the décor included a lot of wood. A colour scheme consultant from Guthrie Bowron and a Dulux representative helped us choose the new earthy-tone colour scheme, and the wooden joinery and beams have been painted in a light, neutral shade, which makes the rooms look much more modern and spacious.

"We chose the earthy tones to fit with the beautiful, natural surroundings of Queenstown, and we have had very favourable comments from guests about the new look."

Bright splashes of aqua and blue have been introduced with runners and cushions on the beds and lounge suites, and these can be changed to bring a different look at some point, says Ann.

The eco-friendly drapes, which help keep the rooms warm in the winter, save on heating costs, and are also appreciated by the guests, she says.

To cater for guests' entertainment requirements, flat-screen TVs, DVD players and IPod docks have been installed in all units, while an internet kiosk gives internet access to guests who want to go online, but don't have their laptop with them.

The total cost of the refurbishments was $300,000.00.

"The bathrooms in the two-bedroom apartments were refurbished in 2009, and with the recently completed room refurbishments, Hurley's easily meets the 4.5 star Qualmark standards, as well as the demands of the travelling public," says Ann. "The accommodation sector is very competitive in Queenstown and we wanted to ensure we were offering excellent quality, comfort and value for our guests."

The complex also includes a gymnasium, sauna, golf storage room, and for the skiers, there is a drying room, storage room and a tuning room where they can wax their skis in preparation for a great day on the slopes.

Hurley's is located within easy driving distance of all four skifields in the Queenstown area – Coronet Peak is 30 minutes away, The Remarkables, 45 minutes, Treble Cone 90 minutes and Cardrona 75 minutes. Cardrona Valley also offers a snow farm for cross-country skiing.

Ann and Allister have operated Hurley's for three years, and have been in the industry for a total of 13 years, all of them in Queenstown.
