The Evolution of Technology in Commercial Bedding – Dispelling the Myths

We have come a long way from using straw and horse hair for pressure relief in our modern sleeping surfaces.
In looking at the common elements of structure, support, comfort and aesthetics, we find that due to ever increasing technological breakthroughs, bedding manufacturers are able to challenge the long held restrictions and beliefs of best practice within the industry.
Structure
Traditionally the structure of the edge of the mattress has been wire edge support. But advancements in foam technology now allows manufacturers to eliminate the rigidity of edge wire by utilising specifically designed foam grades to ensure superior edge support and retention of mattress form, without causing an obvious feel change from spring to foam in the sleeping surface.
Support
You may remember going to camp when you were a child and having to sleep on brittle foam mattresses that you could feel the bed slats through. These mattresses were made of what we would nowadays consider to be inferior quality foam. These foams were predominantly made offshore and pre-compressed which compromised the support cell structure and resulted in poor performance over time.
For years pocket springs have typically only been considered suitable for retail applications. Technological advancements in wire gauge and pocket construction has meant these solutions are now a mainstay of the Commercial bed. Their superior performance provides motion separation and independent movement throughout the unit, minimizing partner disturbance.
Comfort
Once the right blend of support foam and or springs has been utilised then the comfort layers of a mattress become an essential comfort factor.
When it comes to comfort, not all foam is created equal. High quality comfort foam needs to be balanced between comfort and support whilst keeping consistent cell structure. This consistency allows sufficient air flow throughout the mattress ensuring the mattress can breathe and help regulate temperature while providing support to all parts of the body.
Technological advancements in bed construction allow for a plushness in the quilt layer whilst giving structure and edge rigidity so a king and superking twin mattress can join in as seamless as possible a manner, allowing multiple sleeping configurations for the Accommodation sector.
Wool is often used as a comfort technology as it keeps your body warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Pure New Zealand Wool has been long recognised for its ability to draw and evaporate many times its own weight in moisture away from your body.
Aesthetics
International fabric suppliers have been working with leading manufacturers to develop industry appropriate options from natural cottons, to breathable fabrics, moisture management and soft fire retardant options. Gone are the days of stiff crinkly cream fabric being the only option.
Smart upholstery fabrics can offer a functional yet stylish option for bases and when combined with a range of leg options can eliminate the need for matching valances or quilted base covers altogether. With such a wide range of colour options these can complement the room styling and provide a much needed depth to an often white ensemble.
A great night's sleep in a well-constructed bed ensures people will come back to stay again and again. Great beds are great for business.
